General Information
The two towns have grown together. Windermere is situated on high ground overlooking Lake Windermere and Bowness,(take the walk to Orrest Head 784 feet for fine views). Windermere village is a 19th century settlement built up around the railway terminus. There is a small shopping area, several Inns and restaurants.

Bowness is a complex mix of old and new. The town is at the center of the Lake District tourist experience.  a walk along the lakeside promenade allows access to park land, the steamers and boating facilities. During the summer season the town is is something of a Mecca for visitors.

How to get there
North from the M6 exit 36, past Kendal by the A591 for 11 miles. By train direct to Windermere station, connections from Kendal and Lancaster.
Lake Windermere from the promenade at Bowness on Windermere. Take a cruise to Lakeside (south) or Waterhead (north).
